Designer Profile

Ipanema Girl launched in 2010 with a clear vision; to create a line of bikinis that are glamorous and unique, combining the best of Brazilian and Australian swimwear styles. A collection that is exclusive, with no more than 24 of one design ever being made. Cuts that are flattering to the figure. Swimwear that compliments the wearer and gets her noticed for all the right reasons.

But the story started long before 2010. Brazilian-born Lourdes Miyoshi migrated to Sydney, Australia in 2003. Like many Brazilian immigrants she was attracted to Sydney for its cosmopolitan lifestyle, proximity to the natural beauty of the Australian East Coast, and of course for its beaches. It was whilst shopping for new swimwear that Lourdes saw a gap in the market. While there were some great swimwear collections in the market, she couldn’t find the range of styles and cuts popular in Brazil, nor so many of the small, exclusive labels that offered unique designs. Out of that frustration a germ of an idea was born. Over the ensuing years, Lourdes talked to many women who felt the same frustration and so she went on to develop the concept of Ipanema Girl.

In a world where consumerism and mass production dominate, Ipanema Girl is something different. A small label that aims to stay small. A style that is both glamorous and accessible. A company with a social and environmental conscience. Swimwear for the woman who wants to make a personal statement, and doesn’t hide behind global brands.
