Daily Labels In the beginning …

AWTO Everything started when the two of us became roommates in late 2011 while living on residence at RMIT University. Ben had previously made some t-shirts and prints but never really entered the market so the idea came up to do something together. Our label was created with just five basic prints for friends. We’re slowly growing and heading in the right direction.

Daily Labels Who does what?

AWTO We both have input towards the process and direction of our label. I design graphics for our prints while Shane organises samples, printing and management.

Daily Labels Are your designers on rotation or regular fixtures?

AWTO At this stage they’re regular fixtures between friends. We all study subjects linked to the design industry so we have ideas that we work on together and pass around. We’re slowly finding our direction and brand image to keep it pretty clear for the future.

Daily Labels Design philosophy?

AWTO Have fun and don't take it too seriously! This was a fun label made by two mates. We had trouble with our first range and were sort of influenced by other labels out there so now we have pulled it in and are more trusting of ourselves. We pretty much want to design anything we would wear and hopefully others out there will like.

Daily Labels How do you keep it fun?

AWTO Well we live together on campus so that’s where we design and run the business. It’s set up in a very social environment where our friends are all in on it, so naturally it’s fun!

Daily Labels AWTOs strong points as compared with other t-shirt labels?

AWTO Our first two releases were received really well with great feedback and we’ve made sales without spending big bucks on websites, magazine editorials, posters and launch parties. We understand the importance of these things and will head there eventually but when we created AWTO, we weren't ready for any of that. We think it’s a positive that everything has gone fairly well under a controlled environment but we’re keen to branch out from here to see how far we can push.

Daily Labels How have you coped with such minimal marketing?

AWTO For what we set out to achieve with our first limited release, it was a success but it also threw up some challenges. Relying on friends and friends-of-friends to buy our t-shirts on Facebook was daunting but we achieved sales. Now we’re ready for the next step.

Daily Labels What’s the next step?

AWTO Our final limited release range that has some new t-shirts, hoodies and sweaters! Again we’ll be selling this exclusively online but fans can keep a close eye out for bigger and better things towards the latter part of 2012!

Daily Labels Most challenging aspect of owning a t-shirt label in 2012?

AWTO Definitely getting our name out there which expected due to lack of financial investment in any advertising. Gaining a following from word of mouth through our university circles and friends-of-friends is quite cool.

Daily Labels Any highlights since your label launched?

AWTO We’d have to say the photo shoot of our second release was pretty exciting as we’re slowly taking steps forward!

Daily Labels Most frustrating part of the production process?

AWTO Running around to make sure the prints and cuts are perfected.

Daily Labels What advice would you give to current and future design students?

AWTO Back your judgement and when designing, stick to what you know and love. If you’re good, then get it out there! [Note: Ben is studying a Bachelor of Design in Architecture while Shane is studying his Bachelor of Construction Management].

Daily Labels Favourite hangout?

AWTO We live next door to a pub in North Melbourne called Turf. It’s not trendy or hipster or anything like that, but it’s a place we go for a good time with mates.

Daily Labels Favourite AWTO t-shirt?

AWTO The Better Days tee from our new range is pretty cool also because this t-shirt is one step closer to us achieving a desirable image and direction of our brand.

Despite reading a statistic that most new businesses fail within three years of operation, Drew Layton of tshirt label Inspektör Federation waved goodbye to a career in physical education and hello to a career in fashion in 2008.

Lucky for us, he's smashed that theory, hence his appearance on this week's Background Check! We talk to Drew about his staying power and reveal some winter sneak peaks [hint: black and white images only!]

Drew Drew: Boss, Mr Layton: Sales, D Layton: Design, Mr Drew Layton: Accounts plus various freelance artists.

Daily Labels What led a lad with a physical education background to fashion?

Drew To put it simply, I wanted to do something different and thought, “How hard could it be to make some tees?” I quickly found out the answer but have stuck at it and love the challenge.

Daily Labels What’s going on at head office of late?

Drew I’m currently working on a winter tee release (just finished sample printing and they look perfect) plus travelling the world for design inspiration and hunting down potential new stockists.

Daily Labels Current design inspirations?

Drew I love to travel and experience new cultures with the most recent trip being to Europe. Many (but not all designs) are inspired in some way or another by events and people that have made a great societal impact.

Daily Labels Tell us about the collaboration process with your artists?

Drew I’m in regular contact with the freelance designers I work with. I’ve used artists from all over the world but currently using the wonderful skills of some local talent. Being in charge of the design, I put the briefs together for the range as well as ideas for possible designs, but we do leave some creative freedom in the artists’ hands.

Daily Labels What sub-cultures do you find you and your artists referencing the most?

Drew The music and film industry has been a regular reference point, be it a subtle one on most occasions.

Daily Labels What do you like wearing? Is Inspektör reflective of your own tastes?

Drew Whenever possible and appropriate, some slim-fitting jeans and an Inspektör tee does the job. I wouldn’t make anything that I wouldn’t wear myself.

Daily Labels Music wise, what keeps you going during the hard slog?

Drew Triple J is the only radio station allowed in the office.

Daily Labels Biggest test in running your own label?

Drew Getting the brand out there on a limited budget has been a challenge. I guess jumping head first into a business with very little knowledge about the industry or how to run a business was also tough. It has been and still is a great learning experience.

Daily Labels Your biggest achievement?

Drew Easy! Selling tees on Daily Labels! But really, making tees I love and seeing them sell is a great thrill. When starting Inspektör, I read somewhere that more than fifty percent of new businesses don’t make it past three years. Inspektör is now three and a half years old and I love it. Oh yeah – and being invited to participate in a Melbourne Spring Fashion Week parade and party last year – a very memorable night.

Daily Labels What you wish people would understand about working in the fashion industry?

Drew It’s not just as simple as making some tees and selling them. It’s a difficult industry to crack and needs lots of hard work.

Daily Labels What does Inspektör have planned for 2012?

Drew More tees, more stockists and hopefully some kind of parade and party leading into summer.

For our sixth instalment of Background Check, we feature Jacqueline Iacuone, the creative force behind jewellery label Barbarian Gypsy. 

Jacqueline talks to Daily Labels about her plans to expand internationally and the film that melts her heart every time.

Daily Labels Tell us about the person behind Barbarian Gypsy and how you got started?

Jacqueline I’m creative and I love jewellery, accessories and handbags. At 26, I pursued my passion to start importing and designing pieces. I’m always exploring and bettering myself and this was a challenge for me, but I believe in doing what makes you happy and doing things you love – this is my passion.

Daily Labels What's behind the label name?

Jacqueline Barbarian Gypsy came to me as it kind of described my inner character and I want it to empower women around the world. Barbarian is a dominant figure that is part of a tribe not belonging to "normal" civilisation. In my meaning, it should empower women to be strong, set their own style and not fear what others think. Gypsy is a free spirited person.

Daily Labels Your design philosophy?

Jacqueline I want different and unique pieces, not mainstream jewellery. I love bright and bold colours that women love! I keep it diverse so all types of woman can relate to at least one piece of jewellery in my range.

Daily Labels What inspires your jewellery collections?

Jacqueline Seasons and styles have some influence but ideas just come to me at the design stage. I bring what fits into the story of that look book.

Daily Labels Your design influences?

Jacqueline I watch and see fashion all the time. I love vintage clothes and pieces, the old versus the new. I can mix vintage and modern pieces to make it work – I love that look!

Daily Labels What is it like seeing people in Barbarian Gypsy?

Jacqueline I get excited! I love the fact that I can inspire women to express themselves and feel good in my product.

Daily Labels Biggest challenge?

Jacqueline Getting into the market. I find the people that see my product LOVE it, it’s just getting all eyes to see it!

Daily Labels Biggest success?

Jacqueline An international PR company taking my label on in Europe to expand it! That is very exciting and inspiring.

Daily Labels Favourite pieces from your collections?

Jacqueline Always loved the Helena Blue Ring, Wolf Mama Necklace, Rodeo Necklace, Karma Earring and Moo Bag [pictured below]! But I wear and love all of it so it’s hard to pinpoint!

Daily Labels Describe a typical day in production?

Jacqueline I currently work part-time as well as running the business, so I work nights and mornings on Barbarian Gypsy daily. Emailing, visiting clients, talking with press, organising showings, runways and markets and packing orders. It changes everyday.

Daily Labels How do you chill?

Jacqueline I love spending times with friends, watching television shows such as Greys Anatomy, Hart of Dixie, Revenge – that’s my down time. Working out at the gym and outside too. I LOVE the beach. I feel free as a bird when there! I also enjoy watching football and going to the games! Travel is a big part of my life. I love experiencing different cultures but always love coming home to the Australian way!

Daily Labels  Most cherished piece of jewellery?

Jacqueline A coral silver ring that I bought in Greece at age 21 and I still love it today! It’s amazing. But I have boxes of vintage jewellery that I love and get inspiration from.

Daily Labels Hopes for the future of your label?

Jacqueline To become well known throughout Australia as a unique label that brings exciting pieces to women. With this new PR company on board, I hope Europe and the rest of the world get involved too!

Daily Labels Most underrated piece of jewellery?

Jacqueline Lots of jewellery is underrated but I find beauty in unique jewellery, even if it isn't my style.

Daily Labels Do you collect antique jewellery?

Jacqueline I love digging through antique jewellery and bringing it back! Looking through antiques and vintage is a hobby of mine.

Daily Labels Biggest fashion blunder?

Jacqueline A women that is too scared to express her true style!

Daily Labels Any advice for the budding designers?

Jacqueline Do what you do best and make sure you love it! And work, work, work!

Daily Labels Favourite place to shop?

Jacqueline I love vintage shopping all over Melbourne. I go online for clothes however I was travelling all of last year so I stocked up on many clothes from USA and Europe. Lucky me!

Daily Labels Favourite all-time film?

Jacqueline Oh you can’t ask me that, I’m a movie BUFF! I love many movies but a great love story that just consumes my heart is The Notebook. I also love Australian drama – Red Dog is a favourite.

It's hard to believe that Head Designer Simon Lyssiotis relaunched his career only a year ago with menswear label Fontaine. After holidaying in Southern France, his focus had completely shifted.

Simon talks to us about how he hasn't looked back on his corporate background since and which city boasts the best risk takers in the land.

Daily Labels Fontaine – how did it come to be?

Simon I had a concept for a fashion label while at university but felt I needed corporate experience. I quickly realised corporate Australia wasn’t for me – its many pitfalls I could never accept. On annual leave in 2010 in Southern France, I made a pact with myself to be happy, start a brand new career and be my own boss using my skills and talents. I have not looked back since.

Daily Labels Before Fontaine?

Simon I was working in corporate marketing and sales in fast moving consumer goods.

Daily Labels Any story behind the title of your label?

Simon Fontaine means fountain in French although this was not the motivation. I came across the name in an old novel. I just knew it was the name.

Daily Labels Greatest achievement since launching in 2011?

Simon I’ve achieved what I dreamed of achieving: a durable product of high quality, integrity and artistry. Fontaine being sold all around Australia has also been a success.

Daily Labels Your biggest challenge?

Simon Always finding inspiration for a new collection. When it hits, the wait is always very well worth the inspiration.

Daily Labels What you wish you knew before that you know now?

Simon Perhaps I had some misconceptions about how the fashion industry works, however, I feel we all have a very good handle on it now. 

Daily Labels Your design inspirations?

Simon A unique narrative and theme told through artwork and colour. The aim of each collection is to be translated to another person’s life and experiences. We are often dealing with confronting issues and we want to challenge and inspire people with ideas and themes that can be interpretative. Our latest collection The Other Side of Midnight was influenced by concepts of the anti-stereotype, the fine line between solitude and isolation and the conquest for paradise through the seductive and destructive path of hell. After-dark desires and activity is something we are highlighting in this collection.

Daily Labels A typical day in production?

Simon It consists of a great deal of liaising between fabric suppliers, garment constructors and screen printers. It can get intense, but we are a very organised and efficient group of people. Days are planned in advance and timelines are well followed. We take our time in order to produce quality garments.

Daily Labels The perfect outfit on a man?

Simon This depends on seasons. In winter, trench coats and coats in shades of grey and brown accessorised with scarves and dark panama hats over an elegant cardigan, long sleeved top or printed tee. In warmer months, nothing beats a t-shirt with a cool pair of jeans. In especially hotter months, a fitted singlet and a pair of shorts.

Daily Labels The worst?

Simon Anything that is fad like. I don't believe in fad like fashions. Those silly little trends that you see the mass majority mimicking which are in and out in no time.

Daily Labels Your style icon?

Simon I'm a big fan of classic looks – Marlon Brando, James Dean, Paul Newman and Frank Sinatra. These guys were very sharp dressers yet had the elegance, talent and intrigue I believe makes an icon in any sense of the word. Men like Brando, Dean and Newman pulled off the fitted singlet perfectly. More contemporary examples would include George Clooney and Lenny Kravitz.  Clooney is a well-dressed and talented gentleman. Kravitz has a more avant garde rockstar look to him that works really well.

Daily Labels Best male dressed city in Australia?

Simon I would have to say Melbourne. Melbourne men seem to take more risks than any other city I’ve seen. Yes, you do get the carbon-copy generic fads like you get anywhere, but there’s a good proportion of individualism. Men aren't afraid to dress how they want, even if it isn’t the current trend. I like a risk taker.

Daily Labels The way men dress in Australia is different to five years ago. Do you agree?

Simon I don't think it’s significantly different. I think if you were to compare it ten or even fifteen years ago, then yes. I think the big difference is a factor of risk taking because societal rules of how genders should behave have changed. Fortunately, more men these days are willing to abandon those constrictions and do as they please. It’s a great thing to see people dressing as they naturally feel inclined without worrying about what others will think. I love seeing people wearing something that is unique to their personality.

Daily Labels Any projects in the works that you can tell us about?

Simon None that I can discuss

Daily Labels What does the future hold for Fontaine?

Simon Continuing to offer the high artistic and quality standards in t-shirts that our customers expect from us as well as expansion in other categories. 

Daily Labels How do you spend your down time?

Simon With an exercise combination of weights, cardio and yoga plus cinema, literature and lots of time with loved ones.

Daily Labels Favourite hangout?

Simon Difficult question. Though the first thing that comes to mind is a beautiful ocean. Best thing in the world.

Daily Labels Where do you like to shop?

Simon Melbourne has some wonderful boutiques as with areas of Queensland and Perth. Internationally, you can’t beat Hong Kong, New York, Paris and Milan for all different sorts of items. I do have a preference for independent unique concept boutiques as well as classical haute couture.

Daily Labels Last meal that took your breath away?

Simon A simple meal in Barcelona on my last visit. It was a restaurant way out of the tourist district in a residential suburb. The main meal consisted of barbequed rabbit served with chickpeas and a side salad of cod, white beans and onions. Amazing.

Daily Labels Favourite piece from your collections?

Simon My favourites always change. Currently my favourite piece is Love Hangover from Chapter 3 of The Other Side of Midnight [pictured below]. For me, it perfectly captures the morning after a big night. The remnants of the evening swirl through the mind like an intoxicated kaleidoscope. For better or worse, the memories are singed into your mind and you will never be able to forget it.

Sofia Pace For the past year I’ve been following a few street trend and fashion blogs and thought, 'Why not start my own!?' My aim was to create a blog that touches briefly on all aspects of the fashion industry such as emerging trends, street fashion, news and events. 

Daily Labels Is your blog a full-time gig? What else do you do?
Sofia Pace After deferring for two years to be a Product Developer and Assistant at Myer Miss Shop, I’m currently finishing my Fashion and Textile Merchandising degree at RMIT.

Daily Labels Your favourite fashion blogs?

Sofia Pace I love looking at street trend blogs but my top three fashion blogs would have to be Jak & Jil [for the best street fashion from around the globe], Studded Hearts [for fashion shoots and hottest products] and Fashion Toast [for Rumi’s amazing sense of style and great images]. 

Daily Labels Which upcoming Australian labels do you see booming in 2012?

Sofia Pace Ellery. Kym has perfected the balance between innovative and wearable fashion. Each season she produces ready-to-wear with accessories and shoes. She nails trends by adding her signature look with a commercial twist.

Daily Labels What will people get out of reading The Style Space?

Sofia Pace I really hope that people get a brief snap shot of what’s going on in the global fashion world while also seeing a bit of my personal taste and style.

Daily Labels Any inspiration when getting dressed for the day?

Sofia Pace Mainly the weather and my mood.

Daily Labels With fashion moving fast, where will you be in three years?

Sofia Pace Hopefully working as Product Developer for a local label developing collections and travelling the world on buying trips every two months! I’d love to specialise in denim or swimwear.  

Daily Labels Your top three wardrobe pieces?

Sofia Pace I’ve always had an obsession for coats, jackets and skirts, so it makes sense that my top three items all into this category. ONE: basic cropped black leather jacket – best staple that EVERY girl should have. I buy one each season to keep it looking fresh and new. I recently just a textured piece from Zara.  TWO: lamb fur vest – ever since my Nonna gave me her rabbit fur jacket at age 10, I’ve always loved fur. My vest is versatile and transeasonal. Couldn’t love it more! THREE: basic tee – love any type of crew neck tees.

Daily Labels Thoughts on the face of Australian fashion currently?

Sofia Pace It’s nearly been the same for the past 5 years! Sass & Bide, Camilla and Marc, Alex Perry, Alice McCall etc – they’re still the leaders in the marketplace but Australia needs NEWNESS! Though talented, it's all too commercial and not at all exclusive. Our industry desperately needs innovative brands that create hype and excitement within the industry. 

Daily Labels Having been overseas recently, is there awareness internationally of the talent here?

Sofia Pace Unfortunately, there is very small awareness of our talent overseas. Very few labels have broken through the barrier to have a reputable and international name. Local labels face many trend-based challenges when dealing with an international market, especially in Europe and Asia. Here, we aspire to be as fashionable and innovative as the European market – we follow their trends so it’s extremely difficult to make an impact and stand out. In saying this, American fashion is a lot closer to our market making it slightly easier to break through as seen with Zimmermann, Camilla and Marc and Sass & Bide who have brand recognition there.

Daily Labels Best meal of 2012 so far?

Sofia Pace January in Hyde Park London. I was with my boyfriend Steve a few days before Christmas. We had the BEST hot dog in the world at Winter Wonderland Festival. The festival had a merry-go-round that turned into a moving bar. It was absolutely freezing and I couldn’t even feel my nose, but I remember that hot dog was incredible!

Despite the One Undone creative team pouring souls into their forthcoming winter collection, Daily Labels managed to speak with Graphic Artist and Creative Director Brodie Bannerman of Newcastle about how his label came to be and how his involvement in supporting independent designers is also saving the city.

Daily Labels Tell us about the creative team behind One Undone?

Brodie @ One Undone I began One Undone and it has since evolved into a collaboration of artists: Jasper Smith, Alanna Fallon, Scott Newman and Reece Wilson. I screen print all the tees, singlets and jumpers and direct the label.

Daily Labels What led you to a career in fashion?

Brodie @ One Undone I completed a graphic design diploma last year and had a couple of years of screen printing experience, so that led to creating One Undone. It actually began as a university project but now it's a bit more than that!

Daily Labels What's shaking at the label currently?

Brodie @ One Undone A lot at the moment! We recently acquired and fitted out a temporary shop called Nookstore that supports independent Newcastle designers. We’re creating a video clip about what goes on at One Undone. We’re doing our first winter range plus our first cotton pant samples, our first button-up t-shirt samples and our first order of skate decks ... just to name a few things!

Daily Labels Inspiration the One Undone creative team looks to when designing?

Brodie @ One Undone A tough question because all the designs are by the artist team at One Undone known as Free Hands. Everyone has a diverse style which contributes to what One Undone is.

Daily Labels Your daily uniform?

Brodie @ One Undone Whatever is in the t-shirt and shorts draw goes – no one looks back on their life and remembers the hours spent getting ready!

Daily Labels Biggest challenge directing One Undone?

Brodie @ One Undone A lot! Keeping it independent is a major factor. Designing the website. Printing all the t-shirts and singlets plus building the silk screen frames. Establishing a following and being accepted. Plus now, pretty much everything comes out of my garage instead of my bedroom – just to give you a better idea of where One Undone is at.

Daily Labels One Undone's biggest achievement?

Brodie @ One Undone Acquiring a shop space through Renew Newcastle [a non-for-profit group that gathers artists, cultural projects and community groups to use and maintain vacant buildings until they become commercially viable or redeveloped.]

Daily Labels There's talk on your website about One Undone being more of an idea than a label in the future. Talk us through this statement?

Brodie @ One Undone You never know how long something will last. Everyday I wake up and the first thing on my mind is One Undone and what I can do to improve it. The video clip I mentioned earlier will hopefully be available within the next fortnight, both on our website and Facebook – it tells the One Undone story. If you have three minutes of spare time, take the chance to watch it because hard work has gone into it!

Daily Labels Zoe, you're the grand daughter of a rag trade veteran so fashion runs in the blood – but tell us more about your creative endeavours?

Zoe Sernack I’m a trained painter with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and I've held many exhibitions in the past. To support myself, I worked in fashion and jewellery stores before starting my own labels. I still paint and will be having a solo exhibition this year. [Visit Zoe's art website].

Daily Labels How exactly did your jewellery lines come to be?

Zoe Sernack I worked in fashion stores like Nicola Finetti, Zambelli and Leona Edmiston then worked for a small chain of boutiques and became an accessory buyer. I soon realised I wanted to design my own accessories after finding it hard to purchase items I thought would sell well. From there, I teamed up with a good friend and we started a label. We had huge success at a Sydney fashion week festival where designers asked us to collaborate with them to design jewellery. I eventually decided to go out on my own and have never looked back. I can be creative and work with people who inspire me to design new and different items.

Daily Labels Best career advice you've ever received?

Zoe Sernack To stay committed, determined and believe in myself.

Daily Labels How did the guys from Kings Of Leon and Benji Madden come to possess your pieces?

Zoe Sernack I started ZM925 with an ex-boyfriend (who I’m still very good friends with) and Kings Of Leon happened to pick some of the pieces we designed together online. We also found out Paris Hilton "borrowed" pieces from Benji Madden (her then boyfriend) after ex-girlfriend Sophie Monk gifted him with some of our pieces. The late DJ AM also wore our label as did Amy Winehouse.

Daily Labels Describe your personal style.

Zoe Sernack It really depends on the way I’m feeling. Some days it’s all about colour, then other days I’ll wear comfort clothes – boots and oversized long cardigans. I guess it’s a relaxed edgy look ... bit of urban gypsy I guess. And of course, I love my jewels!

Daily Labels Your most cherished piece of jewellery?

Zoe Sernack Ohhh ... that’s a hard question! I have a few. Once I design a new range, there are always certain pieces that become my favourites. I also started designing charms because when I was a young child, my grandmother gave me her childhood charm bracelet. I saw it as an heirloom being passed down and I wanted to do a modern take on it. I love the sentimental value of jewellery and how it can possess the personality of the wearer.

Daily Labels Favourite place to shop?

Zoe Sernack A few places in Sydney actually: The Iconic, The Candy Store and I love My Catwalk. And I love flea markets and vintage stores, especially overseas.

Daily Labels Most stylish city in Australia?

Zoe Sernack I’m guilty of only going to a few of the states in Australia but I would have to say Melbourne. People there have a style that is their own. They seem more inspired to be themselves rather than conforming to the latest trends.

Daily Labels Favourite source of design inspiration?

Daily Labels How do you spend your weekends?

Zoe Sernack My boyfriend and I are pretty active. We love having our friends over as much as possible and having a barbeque or drinks. I also just got hooked (literally) on fishing but anything by the water does it for me – paddle-boarding, walking, swimming or going up north to visit mum and kayak and sail near her place.

Daily Labels Which jewellery designers do you admire?

Zoe Sernack The late Alexander McQueen is an inspiration. His designs were unique and striking. There are so many creative people out there and we now have the technology to find them on online so easily. There’s no reason why we can't be inspired by someone or something everyday!

Daily Labels What is the most underrated jewellery item?

Zoe Sernack Cuffs and guy rings are the most underrated items. There is nothing hotter than a guy wearing jewellery. I have a few guy friends that layer their jewels and rings up. That and a plain white t-shirt and jeans for me is such a turn on, gives them a Johnny Depp vibe yet a strong sense of personal style. I also love when girls have interesting rings in different sizes and stories on their fingers. Lastly, I have some incredible cuffs from Afghanistan and Nepal that are such statement pieces ... they can transform an outfit.

Daily Labels Who would you most love to collaborate with for a collection?

Zoe Sernack When I collaborate, I really get excited to work with someone that has a different outlook and style to my own. I love a challenge, whether it’s working with a different material or a whole new way of designing. There are some incredible fashion-forward people but graphic illustrators and artists are people I love and want to collaborate more with. I can see that some of their work would translate amazingly into pendants. I would also love to work with some top tattoo artists from around the world as well as graffiti artists.

Daily Labels What industry demands do you face now as opposed to when you started out?

Zoe Sernack The retail world is so different today. Boutiques didn't have an online presence before but now, most are online and their reach is worldwide. I now need to make sure I’m more actively involved in what the world is doing rather than what is happening in Australia and New Zealand only. It also means things are a whole lot more competitive so I need to always keep the creative thinking hat on. Also, being copied is a whole lot more easier.

Daily Labels What's planned for 2012?

Zoe Sernack I have relaunched my other label Zoemou having just completed an entire campaign (which I’m really excited to push at the moment). I’m also looking to do more collaborations for ZM925 and doing more graphic pieces.

Daily Labels Your favourite collection that you’ve worked on?

Zoe Sernack The new Zoemou range. Nomadic Sun has been a great experience that I’m really happy and proud of. My most recent ZM925 collection of New Charms has also been a great success. I’m doing larger pieces and the reception to this has been awesome. I will be carrying this on and releasing new designs very soon.

Aprils Chance Inspiration comes from anything. From cult heroes to world travels and abstract artwork.

Daily Labels This is a loaded question but what the heck: do you consider fashion 'art' or is it its own category?

Aprils Chance It is a hard question. A bit of both we feel.

Daily Labels Best thing about running your own label?

Aprils Chance We're in a great industry where you meet loads of different characters. Our journey so far has been fun.

Daily Labels Most difficult aspect of running your own label?

Aprils Chance There are always obstacles you face when running a streetwear label. In general – time frames and printing mishaps, just to name a few.

Aprils Chance Older school nineties styles are coming back. We've just released a Biggie Smalls print from the high summer range. It has done super well since he's one of the legendary MCs of that time. Our Kurt 93' design went bananas also.

Aprils Chance A lot more work and marketing ahead this year. Stay tuned!

Daily Labels If given the choice of all designers in the world to work with ... ?

Aprils Chance We've met a stack of designers and labels in the industry. Guys from Bam Bam, Death By Zero, Ksubi and Small Time Crook. Maybe getting everyone together for a special edition collaboration would be a fun experience.

Daily Labels Does Aprils Chance reflect the personal fashion taste of its designers?

Aprils Chance Yeah that does play a big part when we are designing new prints. If we weren't getting 100% behind it or putting effort into it, we wouldn’t bother releasing any prints.

Daily Labels Can you describe the Aprils Chance style?

Aprils Chance We’re a darker style streetwear brand. We try to steer clear of the mainstream stuff where we can.

It is with feelings of sadness and admiration that we at Daily Labels bid farewell to a label that has built an ardent following nationally and on our website with our subscribers.

Founders Henry Holland and Joshua Oldfield announced on their blog a fortnight ago that they’ve decided to close shop on their label Eleventh Commandment to pursue their dreams in new endeavours.

With Henry planning to hit the university law books this year and Joshua shifting his focus on his new label Trunks, they both made the trying decision to conclude Eleventh Commandment’s high.

These boys lay testament on daring to dream and we wish them both prosperity in their new undertakings.

We will forever treasure their early involvement with Daily Labels and thank them for producing some quality garments over the years for our fans. They will be missed.

We’re just getting a little excited about a new label on board this week.

 Clover Love. 

This professional artist is no fool. Amongst frequent gallery gigs and retail store events showcasing her paintings, Kristie Stenning launched her label Clover Love at Sydney’s Bondi Markets only three years ago.

Soon after moving her items into boutiques nationally, Kristie found her label travelling as far as London and Los Angeles too. Since then, her delightfully soft and flowing fabrics have not only caught our keen eye but also that of some British press heavyweights at Vogue, Elle and Grazia.

If the girl wasn’t busy enough, plans to expand Clover Love into a collection that doubles as an art exhibition are in place. There’s no time to be tired.

Clover Love is handmade in Australia and we’re pretty chuffed to have these feminine threads with Daily Labels. So should you. Don’t miss out.

Festive season was just hitting when we last checked in to our blog so we’d like to wish all our fans, friends, foes and anyone else for that matter a happy new one.

We’re pretty sure 2012 is going to be a slamming year. For one, we’ve got good vibes on it being an even number. Odd numbers make us crap our pants.

2012 is also way easier to handwrite. “11” just isn’t cursive enough for the self-proclaimed typography aficionados in our team.

Plus, it’s only February, so it’s just good to be positive while the sun is still shining, right?

While we’re definitely getting fiddly about autumn approaching, there’s no chance that anyone at head office is packing away any summer items just yet.

Hell no.

In fact, we’re excited to be welcoming two new labels to our online store whose tees’ll slide into your summer wardrobes like lime does at the tip of your Corona. Ona.

  Fontaine. 

Ladies, Fontaine is designed for the lads but there’s no getting around it. The oversized tee as seen on any female Garance Doré snaps will improve anyone’s intelligence on this one.

Designer Simon Lyssiotis designs colourful slim-fitting tees made from 100% cotton. And we’re not just talking any cotton. We’re talking cotton that is Australian made. Don’t mess around.

Already featured a few times in Fashion Journal and with a 10 page summer spread in Fjorde Magazine (page 36), Fontaine has a following of famous nobodies like us plus cool people that go out and drink blackcurrant ciders.

Our new friends are pretty well stocked around the nation but lay claim to a Fontaine this week on Daily Labels if you haven’t already.

 Away With The Others. 

Away With The Others is a Melbourne-based label launching basic prints monthly from university students with a graphic edge. With 5 new designs dropping monthly, Away With The Others is always keeping its appearance fresh and realistic.

All designs are printed with a quantity of 10 making each release limited. They're printed onto a longer cut garment with a ribbed scoop neck.

Featuring very shortly on Daily Labels, their prints are designed to fade over time to reveal a worn appreciated look.

If your stomach juices are squealing with delight and butting into all your social encounters, then it’s because the BMF Agency has launched a wonderful gastronomic donating endeavor in aid of the earthquake disaster in Japan.

As of now, if you visit most Japanese restaurants in Melbourne and Sydney, you will be asked to donate $2 to use their chopsticks.

Proceeds will go to the Pacific Disaster Appeal 2011 and Australian Red Cross.

“We have created a small idea that will hopefully make a big difference to a country in need.” Chris Kay, Head of Account Management at BMF explains.

“Because the donating is done in a social setting, we’re confident this small action will encourage others to think, act and donate.”

Various restaurants in Melbourne and Sydney are already involved but if you’re a restaurant owner or know of any wanting to join in, please email Tommasina at tommasina.panebianco@bmf.com.au.

We’ve ALL been busy this month ... but then there is busy. And we’re beat.

Last week, the Daily Labels team sat at several L'Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival shows. If that wasn’t enough, we also attended some events at the Melbourne International Food Festival where we inhaled delectable food [looking ultra chic doing so if we might add].

And, let’s not discount the fact that this week we’ve charged on at the Alliance Française French Film Festival and checked‐in at the Qantas Australian Grand Prix.

We’ve been doing all the above while combing the country in search of the hottest new designers for your buying pleasure.

So please, if you will, be patient with us. We’re a little overtired and a tad grumpy and on account of all this activity, could also do with some extra sleep, a couple of hour‐long relaxation massages, a home‐cooked rustic dinner and ... did we mention sleep yet? Well that too.

 Highlights + Observations: L'Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival 

Good god, do we love fashion. Yes, we tend to obsess over it from time to time. And yes, we forgot to take the mince meat out of the freezer this morning.

Sorry, where were we going with this?

Oh, that’s right. So even at our weary best, we’re going to give you a festival rundown in splendid dot form with sparkly pictures thrown in for good measure.

Embrace the Colour Wheel

Arnsdorf delighted crowds with lilac and cobalt blue. Carl Kapp gave us forest green, deep purple and bright red in block colour. Elsewhere, treatments of fuchsia, crimson red, bronze, burgundy, midnight blue, metallic silver and grey, bright green, baby blue, gold and colour-of-the‐ moment burnt orange were favoured palettes.

Trousers + Wide‐Legged Pants
Designers said good riddance to ultra‐skinny pants and jeans. The relaxed pant has had its way in Europe and has officially landed here with welcome limbs.

Loose leather pants were even noted in Alice McCall’s collection [we’re not even charging the model herself for this offence]. Trousers were also seen rolled up the leg.

Our Melbourne boy did us proud with metallic brilliance and feminine silhouettes.

Romance Was Born
Keeping black biker chick prevalent this winter with statement biker pieces, the design duo still managed to incorporate beautiful bolts of blue, bronze and red into their pieces.

We love lace because Collette loves lace. And boy does she treat lace impeccably. Feminine glamour all the way.

Gorman
Wonderfully quirky and colourful pieces as only Lisa Gorman knows how with full skirts, waist‐high pants and sleeve‐long blouses mixed with olive green, grey and burnt orange blazers and jackets.

Floral
Nevenka, Limedrop, Karen Walker and Kate Sylvester all combined bold block colours with pretty floral prints.

Skinny Belts
Everywhere and on everyone. In every colour of the rainbow too.

Black was the safe favourite among fellow runway watchers but we did observe some bright young things playing with red, burnt orange, maroon, grey and peacock blue. Refreshing.

So devoted are we to summer, that being forced to wear summer garb with scarves and cardigans one day to peeling each superfluous layer off the next, well, it's causing grief at Melbourne headquarters. It's so bad, that we’ve rebranded Summer: Un-Summer.

Daily Labels are simply sick of stumbling across a gazillion tacky t-shirt slogans given a life at the hands of some questionable individuals.

This categorical commodity shows NO sign of extinction with the wave of Aussies travelling to destinations such as Thailand and Bali for the proximity and the inexpensive price tag that is all too commonly good to refuse.

These said jet-setters unsavourily fall prey to cheap rags at market stalls showcasing t-shirt after t-shirt begging for your Baht.  

All intellectually burning discourse here at headquarters found that after approximately five solid days of exposure to these unfanciful items (statistic reliably provided by our actuarial department), one becomes disoriented by the stench of garbage entwined with incense caught in the hot air that follows them wherever they go.

Here, the mind does some weird shit and processes this chemical imbalance (fact reliably provided by our medical department) that causes the wretched individual to adopt one of these slogans to capture their holiday mantra (or Tinglish).

Wikipedia informs us Tinglish is the imperfect form of English brought upon by the good-natured Thai. God bless. They’ve turned the westerner’s vulgarity into a profitable activity.

What are we loving at Daily Labels this week? Simple! Sydney denim and apparel label Eleventh Commandment's release of its Spring-Summer 2010/2011 collection Made in Space.

This chapter in the Eleventh Commandment saga experiments with the most premium fabrics including combed-cotton jersey, viscose, modal, drill and nylon to produce a fluent and innovative collection. Despite its misleading title, Eleventh Commandment continues its tradition of being 100% made in Australia. As Eleventh Commandment states: "We wanted to produce this range on Venus, but the cost of freight was prohibitive."

The Made In Space collection is a huge step forward in both size and detail featuring men's and women's jeans, tees, dresses, shorts, bodysuits, boardies, chinos and singlets. In fact, it's amazing that designers Henry Holland and Joshua Oldfield found the time to put the 120-piece range together, considering the countless hours Henry spends each week reading to deaf children and the time that Josh dedicates to helping old ladies cross the road.

At Daily Labels, we love supporting up and coming designers in their quest to be seen, heard and worn. That's why we were so excited to hear of a special event being held in Sydney over the weekend of the May 7 - May 9 2010.

The Fashion Foundation of Australia (FFA) is a non-for-profit-organisation dedicated to supporting independent Australian fashion talent while also helping to raise revenue and awareness for the AIDS Trust of Australia. They are holding the Fashion Forward Festival in Sydney this year.

The Fashion Forward Festival offers a unique fashion platform where emerging fashion labels and talent can showcase their hard work to the media, buyers, investors and public. These events are also an important vehicle to help raise revenue and awareness for the AIDS Trust of Australia. The FFA will be donating $10,000 of their revenue directly to the AIDS Trust of Australia from their work on the Sydney festival alone and will be raising additional funds at the upcoming festival.

The FFA will also be taking the message around Australia in 2010. First in Sydney (May), Melbourne (September), Brisbane (November) with finally Perth (February 2011). They aim to support as many new and emerging Australian fashion designers and generate as much revenue and awareness for AIDS and HIV-related issues as they possibly can.

"It's about supporting our culture. It's about supporting a good cause. Get behind the culture and the cause today."

We think it's pretty cool and a great way to support local talent while raising awareness for one of the biggest health issues plaguing our globe. The team at Daily Labels will be making the roadtrip to Sydney to attend the event and we're looking to be involved in the Melbourne event later in the year. Why don't you join us?

 Beginnings.  

It has been a crazy two weeks here at Daily Labels. Friday 19 March marked the greatly anticipated launch of Daily Labels and we celebrated in true style.

A long time in the making, Daily Labels has begun tickling the hearts of fashion lovers and shaking up online shopping as we know it.

To mark the beginning of this unique initiative, Daily Labels celebrated with Friday's launch party at Tsubu Bar with special guest Chris Kaye on the decks.

With a 300 strong guest list, all enjoyed the tasteful delights of Tsubu's Japanese chefs.

Below is testimony to a smashing launch night. Thanks for the support to all who attended.
